Moving from the free WhatsApp Business app on a smartphone to the official WhatsApp Business Platform (API) is the single most important infrastructure upgrade a growing customer service or sales team can make.
Five years ago, getting API access was slow and painful. You had to submit paper contracts to legacy telecommunications providers, wait weeks for manual provisioning, and pay thousands of dollars in setup fees.
Today, Meta provides a streamlined, self-serve onboarding flow called Meta Embedded Signup.
This guide walks you through the exact prerequisites, display name guidelines, and step-by-step actions required to activate your official WhatsApp API account today.
3 Prerequisites Before You Begin
Before starting the setup process, ensure you have these three items ready:
1. A Dedicated Phone Number
Your chosen phone number must satisfy two conditions:
- It must be capable of receiving an international SMS or phone call to verify a 6-digit one-time password (OTP). Landline numbers, mobile numbers, and toll-free numbers (like 1800 or 800) are all supported.
- It cannot be currently registered on WhatsApp: If the number is currently active on the regular WhatsApp consumer app or the WhatsApp Business mobile app, you must delete the account inside the mobile app settings (Settings → Account → Delete My Account) before registering it on the API.
*(Warning: Simply uninstalling the mobile app from your phone is not enough. You must formally delete the account so Meta releases the phone number for API provisioning).*
2. An Active Facebook / Meta Account
You need a personal Facebook profile with administrative access to your corporate Meta Business Manager (or the ability to create a new Business Manager during setup).
3. A Commercial Credit or Debit Card
Meta requires a credit card added to your WhatsApp Business Account payment portal to bill your official conversation fees.

Step 1: Launch the Connection Flow
Inside your software platform (like Aexon), navigate to Settings → Channels → WhatsApp and click "Connect with Facebook".
Step 2: Select Your Meta Business Account
The official Meta dialog will appear. Select your existing Meta Business Manager from the dropdown list. If you do not have one, Meta will guide you through creating one in 60 seconds.
Step 3: Create Your WhatsApp Business Account (WABA)
Select "Create a new WhatsApp Business profile". Enter your legal company details, official timezone, and operating currency.
Step 4: Configure Your Display Name
Your Display Name is the name that appears at the top of customer chats:
- Approval Rule: Your display name must directly match your legal entity, your trade license, your consumer brand, or your official website URL.
- Examples of Approved Names:
"Apex Dental Clinic","Apex Realty Dubai". - Examples of Rejected Names:
"Best Cheap Dubai Properties"(generic marketing slogans are automatically rejected by Meta's naming filters).
Step 5: Verify Your Phone Number
Enter your clean phone number (with country code). Select whether you prefer to receive your 6-digit verification code via SMS or Voice Call. Enter the code into the screen.
Once the code is verified, the modal closes. Your phone number is officially active on the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Display Name Guidelines: How to Avoid Rejections
Meta applies automated consistency rules to all requested display names:
- No Capital Letter Abuse: Do not use all-caps unless your registered trademark is an acronym (e.g.,
"KFC"is allowed;"BEST CARS DUBAI"will be rejected). - No Extra Punctuation or Emojis: Emojis, exclamation marks, and trademark symbols (
™,®) are not permitted in the display name. - Clear Corporate Relationship: If your brand name differs from your legal company name, your website must clearly state the relationship (e.g., *"Apex Living is a trading brand of Apex Commercial Holding LLC"*).
Configuring Meta Billing: Paying Baseline Rates
To ensure your messages are never interrupted, configure your payment method directly with Meta:
- Go to business.facebook.com/settings.
- Under Accounts, click WhatsApp Accounts.
- Select your new account and click Settings → WhatsApp Manager.
- In WhatsApp Manager, click Account Tools → Payment Settings.
- Add your corporate credit card.
By adding your payment card directly to Meta, you ensure that conversation costs are billed at official baseline rates without middleman markups. For a full breakdown of message costs, read our WhatsApp API message pricing guide.
What to Do After Connecting Your Number
Once connected, your account is immediately in Tier 1 (or Unverified 250 limit).
To scale smoothly:
- Complete Business Verification: Submit your trade license to unlock 1,000 to unlimited daily conversations. See our Meta business verification guide.
- Create Your First Message Templates: Draft utility and marketing templates inside your dashboard and submit them for automated Meta approval.
- Set Up Automated Welcome Flows: Build instant auto-replies so inbound customer inquiries are answered inside the 24-hour service window.
